ROAD RUNNERS

-

powered their way down field to score.

Everything but the proverbial kitchen sink was thrown into the game in the closing minutes but the Perth men couldn’t find the try.

Shire travel to take on Ardrossan this weekend. Three members of the Perth Road Runners ventured south to compete in the Great North Run.

The event, regarded as the biggest half marathon in the UK and the world, welcomed Lou Ella Cole, Martin McEwen and Maureen Summers.

Martin returned in a personal best time of 1:21.34, Lou Ella clocked 1:53.15 while Maureen completed the course in a time of 2:52.56.

At the Islay Marathon, the road runners were represented by two members, Gillian Smith and Kevin Rogers.

Gillian set a personal best time of three hours and 50 minutes while Kevin dropped under the three-hour mark with two hours and 56 minutes.

Displaying an impressive level of endurance was Robin Livingstone at the Glenmore 24-hour ultra race.

The race starts at noon and continues until the same time the following day, with the challenge to run as many laps of a four-mile trail as possible.

The course was dry but temperatures dropped to minus-four overnight.

Despite this, Robin managed to complete 27 large laps to finish with an incredible distance of 111.83 miles, only sitting down for five minutes. This placed him fifth overall, third male.

Meanwhile, in Switzerland, Fiona Manson and Mike Dales ran in the Jungfrau Mountain Marathon.

It’s a race involving 42.2km and 1830 metres of ascent from Interlaken to Kleine Scheidegg, which sits below the north face of the Eiger.

The weather was a little disappointing as a thick cloud covered the mountains but Mike crossed the line in 5:19.48 and Fiona finished in 5:41.27.

Back closer to home were Sue and Alan Bothwell, who ran in the Cumbrae 10mile. Sue finished in 1:47.59 and Alan shaved over four minutes off his previous best time to post 1:35.40.

This also meant Alan achieved the green club standard for the 60-64 age category, which is combined standards across multiple events.
