Luncarty planning to flip script on Scone

-

Luncarty midfielder Chris Anton is determined to help make up for the club’s Perthshire derby defeat earlier in the season.

The Bleachers and Scone Thistle face off at Brownlands Park in the North Super League on Saturday with the fixture sure to produce an entertaining watch.

Scone got the better of the teams last month when goals from Ross Mitchell and Aaron Carlon secured at 2-1 victory in a hard-fought midweek battle.

Anton is hoping to flip the script this time around but realises the visitors are on a fine run of form and won’t be pushed aside with any ease.

“We completely let ourselves down the last time we played Scone,” Anton said. “It eradicated what we had done on the Saturday against Lochee United.

“Out of the two games it was probably the Scone one that we’d be expected to get the three points from. So it was a big blow for us.

“In past years I’ve missed these games because, being at Jeanfield, you didn’t really have any other local teams in your division.

“You forget how much it means to people and there is always an extra bit of bite about the match. That is good and gives the game a competitive edge.

“When we played against Scone the first time, I was impressed with them. I thought they were well-drilled and fit.

“They have a style of play that suits them and the players they’ve got. They have some talented players in the team.

“While we’re saying we should be going out to get three points, we’re taking nothing away from them because they are a good team. You can see that with their other results.

“We’ve had a couple of niggling injuries in the squad with people playing through it.

“I was injured for the last couple of weeks but came back on Saturday.

“So it’s been a difficult time but the start of the season can be like that when you have two games a week. We have a strong squad and hopefully everyone will be back for Saturday.”

Scone sit better off in the current standings, boasting a three-point advantage over Luncarty.

Anton knows it’s hard to predict how the league is going to unfold at present and said: “It’s an interesting league because you need to play everyone three times.

“There isn’t a lot between all of the teams and they all have different styles of play. It’s a very competitive league, which is good.

“When it starts to get into the winter months, you see how it’s panning out and get a better idea of where you’re going to be.

“We started out well in preseason and the boys we’ve brought in have been doing quite well. At the start of the season it was maybe hoped to be mid-table.

“But after having a look at most of the teams, you start to think that we could be right up there competing.

“We beat Lochee and then Carnoustie in the cup, who are probably the two best teams in the league along with Broughty Athletic.

“You really have to try and put a stamp on this league and believe that you can compete at the top end. Hopefully we can stay up that end as the season goes on.”

Saturday’s match is taking place at Brownlands Park and is penned in to kick-off at 2.30pm.
