MAY RELISHES DONS RETURN Extra pressure could help me says striker

The hours of training paid off for Stuart Robertson when he raced to victory at the Scottish 10k Championships in Stirling.

A member of Perth Road Runners, he stormed around the course to clinch the gold medal in the 50-59 age category.

“I think my competitive edge is getting stronger,”Stuart said. “It’s always been there and the older you get, you realise you might not have many more chances.

“It’s a great feeling and you know that all of the hard work has come to fruition.”

The St Johnstone striker has been limbering up for tomorrow’s Premiership trip which sees him head to Pittodrie for a fixture with former club Aberdeen.

May returned to Saints at the tail end of last month having picked up little game-time in the north east throughout preseason.

His Perth homecoming took longer to get over the line than hoped but now, having spent a couple of weeks at McDiarmid, he’s ready to hit the ground running.

The 26-year-old realises all eyes will be on his performance against the Dons.

He said: “There might be a little bit more pressure on me than if it was another team.

“It’s always going to be like that when you return to teams you’ve played for.

“The move has just happened so there is pressure but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I just need to take it all in my stride and we need to try put in a good performance as a team, then see how far it takes us.

“Getting a couple of goals would be ideal for me. But I’d take no goals and three points right now if that was the option.

“It will be a tough game, it’s a hard place to go, but one where St Johnstone have had good results over a number of years.

“There is definitely potential to pick up points but it’s not easy with the way Aberdeen set up. They have a lot of quality.

“They are probably in a gelling period, having put in a lot of good performances. They’ve had a few they’ll be disappointed with as well.

“With a good result the other week, Aberdeen will be looking to build on that. It’s up to us to stop that and put in a performance ourselves.

“We’ll go up to Aberdeen and have a real go. It’s good to get a full training week in ahead of the game, which is only going to benefit me and others.

“Drey Wright is coming back and Jason Holt is getting back involved, another one who hasn’t played as many games as he would’ve liked.”

May is overwhelmed with the reception he has received from Perth fans since arriving back at McDiarmid.

“Everything has been good, it feels like I haven’t ever been away,” he continued.

“There’s a lot of the old faces and that makes it easier, because sometimes with a new club it can be a tough settling in period. But I don’t need that here.

“I knew I was going to get a good reaction from the fans.
