LATE SWOOP FOR CALLUM Defender joins Saints squad

-

St Johnstone yesterday secured the signature of leftsided defender Callum Booth.

The former Hibernian and Dundee United full-back has joined the Perth club on a short-term deal until January to provide further competition.

Booth was recently looking to carve out a career down south with Bury but was left without a club following their expulsion from the English leagues.

“We have signed Callum Booth on a deal to January so that will give us the competition we have been looking for at left-back,” said Saints boss Tommy Wright.

“He joined Bury after leaving Dundee United and got caught up in the problems there.

“Callum is a great quality player to pick up at this time of the year for nothing.

“He is a good age and knows the league well, so he ticked a few of the boxes we were looking for.

“He is versatile and can play a few positions so will be a good addition. He’s been keeping himself fit so will be ready to go into the squad.”

The Perth manager welcomed Booth to McDiarmid after Saints had battled well to secure a point away at Aberdeen on Saturday.

“We talked through the week of the need for everyone to be on their game and they were,” Wright said.

“We’ve come here and gone to Hibs and should have had three points in both.

“We created the best chances and looked in control against a really good side. We showed character.”

Wright, meanwhile, has hit back at comments made by Scottish singer Amy Macdonald on BBC Radio Scotland’s Off the Ball show.

Macdonald’s husband Richard Foster – now at Ross County – left Saints last month following a training ground verbal bust-up with his manager.

Speaking on the lunchtime programme, she accused Wright of being “hot-headed” and said the incident was “basically a nothing thing”.

Responding yesterday, Wright said: “The show she was on markets itself as petty and ill-informed, so they certainly got both of that last weekend.

“It was petty and it was certainly ill-informed, it was so far from the truth as you
