Piece of cake for birthday boy Michael

-

Perthshire baker Michael Chakraverty celebrated his birthday in style by making his way through to the next round of the Great British Bake Off.

It was dessert week in the Bake Off tent and Michael, from Scone, managed to do just enough to make his way through to the next round.

Judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood had warned throughout the episode that Michael may be in danger of being axed.

The signature challenge was a layered meringue cake, where Michael chose to do a dark chocolate orange meringue as he always enjoys a chocolate orange at Christmas.

He used dark chocolate orange ganache, orange liqueur and caramelised hazelnut spikes to make his cake.

In the technical challenge, Michael did not perform quite as well, and ended up coming near to the bottom in the judging.

Judge Prue had asked the bakers to make a verrine, with layers of mango compote, coconut panna cotta, raspberry jelly, coconut and lime steusel and a sable biscuit in a glass.

In the showstopper challenge, Michael managed to do enough to be saved, after the bakers were asked to make a bombe cake.

The showstopper challenge came on Michael’s 26th birthday, and he joked he would do the challenge“blind drunk and see what happens”to celebrate.

Michael chose a black forest gateau theme, and made his bombe with cherry jelly, chocolate and banana mousse and chocolate and cherry Italian meringue.

However, when it came to the final judging, the judges decided to send Priya home, with Steph getting star baker for the third time in a row.

Michael and the fellow Bake Off contestants will now take on festival week.
