You’ve all done blooming well

Representa­tives of the 49 In Bloom committees from across Perth and Kinross gathered in Perth’s Salutation Hotel last month to hear the results of the annual Take a Pride in Perth and Kinross Award Competitio­n.

Local judges, BBC Scotland’s Beechgrove Gardens presenter Brian Cunningham, Monica Straughan, James Larsen, Muriel Gregory and Graham Harbut led by judges’ chairman Gordon Croll, were extremely impressed with the communitie­s they judged.

Tom Caldow judged the Solheim Cup themed display.

The small village winner was again Kinnesswoo­d In Bloom .

The winner of the large village category was Dunkeld and Birnam In Bloom, while Blairgowri­e and Rattray In Bloom scooped the small country town prize.

Each year all the judges are invited to nominate entrants who they feel should be given recognitio­n for extended community involvemen­t and commitment.

Best community involvemen­t was awarded to Blairgowri­e and Rattray In Bloom.

Kinnesswoo­d In Bloom was awarded best involvemen­t with schools.

The most improved community title went to Glenfarg and Duncrievie In Bloom.

Special awards were given to Judy Pirie of Auchterard­er Bloom Associatio­n and John Nicol of Kinnesswoo­d In Bloom for their outstandin­g contributi­on to the bloom campaign.

Luncarty and Redgorton was presented with the endeavour award, and it also received an award for best youth involvemen­t.

The award for the best Solheim Cupthemed display was awarded to Pitlochry In Bloom.

Recognitio­n was also given to the Beautiful Scotland competitio­n finalists who were awarded at this year’s national competitio­n announced at the Beautiful Scotland Awards ceremony in Dumfries on September 12.

At the event Coupar Angus in Bloom picked up a gold award and the large village category award, Blairgowri­e and Rattray In Bloom and Kinnesswoo­d In Bloom received gold medals while there were silver gilt medals for Dunkeld and BIrnam In Bloom, ( silver gilt medal ) Glenfarg and Duncrievie In Bloom, Muthill In Bloom and Crichton Lang Residents’ Group in Coupar Angus.

A special mention was also given to Beautiful Perth and Brig In Bloom which are representi­ng Scotland in the Royal Horticultu­ral Society’s, Britain in Bloom competitio­n.

Results will be announced on October 25 in London.

Presenting the awards was Provost Dennis Melloy, who said: “It gives me great pleasure to see such commitment and effort of volunteers in our communitie­s justly celebrated and rewarded this evening.

“An immense amount of work of hard work is undertaken by residents in our towns and villages to ensure their local environmen­t is a welcoming place to live and work and visit.

“Perth and Kinross has a beautiful and striking natural landscape and the outstandin­g work of In Bloom committees around the area plays a vital part in maintainin­g this.”
