MP is not representing allhisconstituents

-

While we welcome Luke Graham’s decision to turn down a position in the current government (letters, September 13), it is a pity that he did not use his newfound freedom to back the ‘Benn Bill’ to help prevent a no-deal Brexit.

It is an even greater pity that the Scottish Conservatives have now dropped their opposition to a no-deal Brexit.

There has never been a mandate for no deal - it has never commanded anything close to a majority in the polls.

Moreover, what was promised by the Vote Leave campaign in the run up to the EU referendum is undeliverable, making the EU referendum itself undemocratic.

Luke often mentions that he was elected on a manifesto to deliver Brexit.

He was elected by 41 per cent of voters in his constituency – is he saying he is only representing them?

In the EU referendum, 60 per cent of voters in Luke’s constituency voted remain. Is Luke not supposed to represent them, also?

Finally, Luke describes Brexit as “just one of a long list of priorities”.

Brexit is not “just one of a long list” it is the defining issue of our time.

Brexit will affect us and succeeding generations for years to come.

If we leave the EU, the UK will spend the next 10 years negotiating trade deals while failing to address many other important issues, such as education, housing, transport, the NHS, consumer rights, workers’ rights, environmental protection – all of which will be affected by our leaving the European Union.
