Scone head into game two in high spirits

- Robbie Chalmers

SCONE THISTLE ....................................... 4 WOLFHILL .................................................. 0 Scone Thistle AFC will head into their second cup fixture in a week in high spirits.

The Perthshire side are coming off the back of a resounding 4-0 home win over Wolfhill in the first round of the Ashleigh Cup at the weekend where impressive wide man Owen McDonaldTaylor scored and also bagged a hat-trick of assists.

Scone will head to Glasgow tomorrow to play Hampden AFC in the second round of the Scottish Cup after a convincing display.

Smart Fixings Division Two rivals Wolfhill, who have become a regular team in the second division in the past two seasons, started brightly on Saturday, with two efforts going close but without troubling new Scone keeper Kris Main.

Scone’s Owen McDonald-Taylor then found room on the left wing and beat the left back for pace before picking out fellow attacker Rae Kelbie with a ball across the face of goal.

Kelbie then slotted home from close range to give the home side the lead, and ending his recent goal drought in the process.

A few minutes later a Scone ball from the left found striker Andy Crichton whose good close control forced the Wolfhill keeper into a save from his acrobatic attempt.

Scone’s attacking intent gathered momentum as they searched to double their advantage.

They did not have long to wait as Thistle boss John Cleisham’s front three were again causing havoc when Kelbie found McDonald-Taylor who, from a tight angle, was able to squeeze the ball from the opposite side to Crichton for an almost identical easy tap in goal to.

Reece MacKintosh won the break of the ball just before half time and his through ball to McDonald-Taylor looked to be enough but his shot was stopped by the Wolfshill stopper just before referee Richard Smith blew the half-time whistle.

Just after the break the home side made it 3-0 as Reece Mackintosh’s long ball over the top eluded everyone but McDonald-Taylor who was able to run in behind the defence and keep his nerve one-on-one with the goalkeeper to slot home.

The game seemed to drop in tempo drastically after the third goal and both sides seemed to have players carrying injuries.

The game was finally ended when good work from Crichton on the wing found McDonald-Taylor at the edge of the six yard box who capped of a great performance with his third assist, cutting the ball back for Sammy Touray to score and secure cup progress for SconeThistle.
