River Tay is inspiration for new artwork going on display

-

Two top artists are set to carry out a commission in Perth city centre.

Elizabeth Ogilvie and Rob Page will create a new piece of work called‘Meander’after winning Culture Perth and Kinross and Perth and Kinross Council’s art commission at Burt’s Vennel on Mill Street.

Meander will pay homage and celebrate the River Tay and its significance on the city of Perth.

The commission will be officially opened by John Swinney, MSP for Perthshire North, on Friday, November 1 between 6pm and 8pm in the Mill Street car park adjacent to Burt’s Vennel.

At the opening event, visitors will be able to enjoy performances from a range of speakers, including from Perthshire poet Jon Plunkett, who has also been commissioned to write a poem inspired by Meander.

Katie Fowlie, who led the education programme, will provide an‘anthotype kit’on the night for people to take away, inspired by the‘By Leaves We Live’exhibition she put together with pupils from local primary schools.

A spokesperson for Culture Perth and Kinross said:“In a stunning and dramatic transformation of the city centre facade, the work invites the public to explore and reflect on their magnificent river, and inspires them to reconsider their relationship to their surroundings and how they see the world.

“The work incorporates fluctuating abstract imagery inspired by the River Tay, providing a reflective and ever changing spectacle.”

The event on November 1 will also feature a talk on Patrick Geddes from Dr Murdo Macdonald.

The event will be free to attend and will be a celebration of Perth’s contemporary arts scene.
