Perth boxers start season in style

-

Perth Railway Boxing Club members got their season underway in fine style over the weekend.

Zack Fummey and Luke Bibby both travelled to Montrose for Hands of Stone Boxing Club’s home show.

And they returned to Perth with victory, Fummey defeating Ben Munro from Granite City Boxing Club at 69kg.

“They had boxed twice previously and It was one-each,”said Perth Railway Boxing secretary and coach Stuart Campbell.

“This time was really good, Zack had a game-plan and stuck to it. He stepped to the left of his southpaw opponent and made some cracking left hooks.

“It was a split decision but I don’t think there were any arguments.

“Zack was wanting to gauge how he was feeling, because he’s wanting to go in for the Northern Districts at the end of November. After that performance he’s going to go ahead and have another crack at it.”

Bibby showed his class to get the better of Scott Murray, also from Granite City BC.

“Luke’s opponent was taller, stronger and had contemplated going professional,”added Campbell.“He was a strong competitor.

“But Luke totally outclassed and outworked him. He kept coming forward but Luke worked the body and head to secure a unanimous decision.

“Luke has been non-stop down at the high performance centre with the Scotland team. He did get a call-up but his opponent pulled out with an injury.

“That would have been his first Scotland vest. Hopefully the next available slot, he’ll get picked.

“Zack and Luke are our two top boys and they really do put the work in.

“When you’re going to a show with the two of them, you know you are going to get your money’s worth.”

Also in action over the weekend was Perth’s Finn Scott. The youngster travelled to Nairn for the Jacobite Boxing Club show.

He was edged out by split decision against Shaun Young but showed plenty of positive signs.

Campbell said: “From what I’m hearing it was a close split decision, but went to the home boxer.

“I watched the video and it was a hard-fought contest. Neither of the boys were willing to give an inch and it could easily have gone the other way.”

Railway boxers Matthew Hunter and Jason Townsley are in the ring this weekend. They travel to Rutherglen for Duries Boxing Club’s show.
