ROAD RUNNERS

-

There was a golden performance from Perth Road Runners at the National Cross Country Relays.

The Cumbernauld event welcomed a bumper crowd from the Fair City with 10 ladies and 12 men taking to the start line.

In the team event, each runner took their turn running the hilly, muddy 4k loop alongside some of the country’s finest and most recognisable athletes.

Olympian Callum Hawkins and world mountain running champion Andy Douglas were in the field on a day where a number of impressive times were recorded.

Perth runners did more than make up the numbers, with the team of Dave Knight, Stuart Robertson and Duncan Ryan taking home the gold medal in the V50 category race.

Their combined time of 43:37 was almost a full minute ahead of their nearest rivals.

The male V40 team of Ronnie Glen, Mark Crawford, Eddie Torrie and Kev Rogers were 13th in their category and 76th overall in a combined time of 1:04.28.

And the other men’s team of green vests - Kevin Riddell, Robin Livingstone, Simon Grieshaber and David Stokoe - finished 88th in 1:06.52.

Due to lack of numbers to fill a fourth team, Alan Bothwell ran the first leg as an individual, completing the course in 22:27.

The female V40 team of Fabienne Thompson, Claire Douglas and Lorraine MacPherson put in a very impressive performance.

They narrowly missed out on a podium place having finished only 14 seconds behind third place with a combined time of 53:41, good enough for fifth in category.

The other V40 team of Sue Bothwell, Sarah Swan and Rhona Henderson finished in 21st place in a time of 1:14.28.

And the senior team of Olivia Streatfield-James, Steph Boyd, Tessa Ward and Sam Newington finished in 45th place in a combined time of 1:19.43.

On Sunday, Lou Ella Cole ran the 10k at the Leven Runfest. The multi-terrain route started and finished on the beach.

Lou completed the race in 54:20, which saw her finish sixth female overall and first V40.

Piotr Fieodorow, meanwhile, travelled to Jedburgh for their annual running festival and completed the half marathon in 1:42.27.

Also on Sunday, four PRRs headed for Fife to take part in the inaugural Benarty Hill Race.

Starting and finishing in Lochore Meadows Country Park, the route climbs almost 1000ft to the top of Benarty Hill before dropping back down through fields into the park. Neil Muir was first club member home in 49:48, which was good enough for first MV55, followed by Stewart Reid in 51:29, Lisa Aikman 52:51 and Bryan Jenkins 57:57.
