Craig showing his fighting spirit to raise charity funds
Big-hearted Craig Harrigan has been pushing himself through the pain barrier for a good cause.
The 33-year-old, from Perth, is limbering up for his first ever mixed martial arts contest at a muchanticipated charity fight night.
Ultra MMA will take place on November 16 at the Glen Pavilion in Dunfermline and hopes to land a knockout blow to cancer.
Funds raised on the night will go towards Cancer Research UK and that is a cause close to Craig’s heart.
“The event has been running for a wee while now,”Craig explained. “They do Ultra MMA and one of my friends was fighting earlier in May.
“I thought it was something I would like to do and was a different way to raise money for charity.
“I’ve got a lot of friends and family coming to watch. I’m more nervous about that than actually fighting. I suppose you are nervous to get embarrassed.
“I’m doing this for Cancer Research and a few years ago me and my daughter did the West Highland Way for the same reason.”
Getting himself in shape has been a rewarding experience and he has been aided by Perth’s Style Combat Fitness and Xross Fight Gym in
Kirkcaldy.
“I’ve been involved with boxing in the past, but when I started with the MMA it was fresh and I hadn’t done it before,”added Craig.
“I don’t actually find out who I come up against until the weigh-in, which is two days before the fight.
“I love it and, when all this is finished, I’ll keep doing it. I’ve enjoyed the training and even for the health side of things, it’s really helped me.”
Raising as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK is the goal.
“I’m hoping for a wee push now with donations,”said Craig.“I know it’s hard for people to afford the ticket, the bus and the night as well as donate.
“I hope I can appeal to people who might think I’m doing something good. A lot has gone into this.”
