FOOTBALL Amateur teams in third round action

-

Perthshire will be represented by four teams in the Scottish Amateur Cup third round this weekend.

Determined to advance through to the next stage is Division One title challengers St Johns, who have the advantage of a home tie.

The Perth side welcome Dirrans Athletic, who hail from the Ayrshire region, to the North Inch on Saturday afternoon.

St Johns manager Jimmy Carle was not likely to have a full strength squad for the match but was backing his players to perform.

“I don’t know too much about Dirrans Athletic to be honest but I do know that it will be a hard task,”he explained to the PA.

“We actually have a few injuries so this will hopefully show the strength in our squad.”

Striker Billy Carle has been a prolific goalscorer through the years and is out to help fire St Johns into round four.

“Going by their results they are a very strong team,”Billy said of Dirrans Athletic.“They only lost 2-1 against recent Scottish Cup winners Shortlees.

“We wouldn’t have minded an away tie as we were at home in the last round too. I think all teams like an away day.

“We have always been a confident team, but you can’t be overly confident.

“We know we need to be at our best in every game to win and to achieve what we want this year.

“The Scottish Cup is good to play in but the most enjoyable ones are the big league games and cup finals.

“That’s what the team’s worked hard for throughout the season.”

The remaining three Perthshire sides in the competition are all on their travels.

Jeanfield Swifts, who will be backed by a bumper travelling support, head for Ayrshire to take on New Farm Loch.

The Perth side’s opponents hail from Kilmarnock.

Also making the journey to Ayrshire this weekend will be Alyth. They play Stewarton United and make the trip off the back of a 6-1 cup victory against Vale of Atholl.

Luncarty ASC are looking to advance against Ormiston in East Lothian.
