A90 flyover to remain closed

-

A flyover across the A90 in the Carse of Gowrie has been closed for the foreseeable future after“extensive damage”was caused by a digger.

Vehicles have been stopped from crossing the weakened structure due to“a likelihood of danger to the public” since Thursday evening.

BEAR Scotland engineers completed detailed inspections of the damaged overbridge at Glencarse for over five hours, which was struck by the plant vehicle atop a transporter truck at around 5pm.

The northbound A90 closed overnight as a precaution whilst the incident clearance works were progressed and an inspection of the structure could be completed.

The northbound A90 towards Dundee was reduced to one lane during the day on Friday to allow engineers safe access to inspect the bridge.

The road reopened to both lanes in the afternoon, with the southbound A90 continuing to operate as normal.

Engineers identified“extensive damage”to two of the bridge’s beams which support the deck, meaning the overbridge, which carries the Glencarse to St Madoes local road across the A90, needs to remain closed until repair work can be carried out.

Road users wishing to access areas affected by the Glencarse to St Madoes road closure will instead be diverted to the Glendoick or Kinfauns interchanges via the A90.

Pedestrians and cyclists can still safely cross the bridge.

Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s north east representative said:“Our engineers have carried out detailed assessments of the structure and have identified extensive damage to parts of two of the beams on the overbridge, meaning we need to keep the flyover closed for safety until repairs can be carried out. Safety is our number one priority and we’ll look to repair the structure as soon as we can.”

Teams carried out inspections throughout the day which were also attended by representatives from Perth and Kinross Council.

A PKC spokesperson said:“The Perth and Kinross Council as traffic authority, being satisfied that there is a likelihood of danger to the public due to the overbridge being struck by a vehicle, hereby prohibit all vehicular traffic on the following length of carriageway.

“The order will prohibit traffic on the C484 Main Road, St Madoes – Glencarse Overbridge from its junction with the A90 slip road to its junction with Cairnie Road, St Madoes. There will be a local diversion in place.”
