Big crowd will have a blast at Inch bonfire

Sparkling displays across the region

-

Around 6000 people are expected to attend tonight’s fireworks display in Perth.

Organised by Perth Strathearn 200 Round Table, the display on the city’s South Inch will take place from 6pm tonight to mark Guy Fawkes Night.

A funfair, food vendors and live music will kick off the evening’s celebrations at 6pm, and the bonfire will be lit at 7pm.

It will be opened by the Provost Dennis Melloy, and this year the ‘guy’ has been donated by the children at Fairview School.

This year’s theme will be the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings, and there will be a fantastic fireworks display over the Inch.

During the event, there will be temporary loos next to the public toilets and extra wheelie bins throughout the site, along with extra police officers, fire safety marshals and first aiders.

Edinburgh Road, which runs between the South Inch and the Lesser South Inch, will also be closed to traffic to allow pedestrians to cross over between the two safely.

And although entry to the event is free, there will be charitable buckets for visitors to donate to Perth Strathearn 200 Round Table for next year’s event.

Although the biggest display is in Perth, there are also other displays across the region to enjoy.

In Crieff, the bonfire and fireworks display will be held in Market Park.

Hosted by Crieff Round Table, the evening starts at 6.30pm with food stalls, before the bonfire is lit at 7pm.

The fireworks will then be set off at 7.30pm.

In Pitlochry, the Pitlochry and Edradour Distillery Community Bonfire will be at the town’s recreation ground on Tuesday, November 5.

The gates will open at 6pm with food and drink stalls, and the bonfire will be lit at 6.45pm, followed by the fireworks display at 7pm.

There will also be a ‘Guy’ competition - those taking part can bring their entry to the Heartland FM stage at 6pm, and the best one will get a hamper from Love Your Sweets.

Also in Highland Perthshire, the Struan Trust is holding a bonfire and fireworks display at the SCC Camp, which is off the B847 Calvine to Trinafour road.

The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm and the fireworks are at 7pm.

Homemade soup, sausage rolls and home baking will be served.

In the run-up to tonight’s events,

Police Scotland has issued a warning to make sure there is no anti-social behaviour and has launched a campaign called Operation Moonbeam.

CI Ian Scott, area commander for Perth and Kinross, said: “Over a number of years we have been fortunate locally to have developed a strong partnership approach to delivering safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night.

“This partnership includes education, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, environmental health, event organisers and perhaps most importantly local residents.

“This has led to a steady reduction to anti-social behaviour linked to this time of year over recent times.

“However we cannot be complacent and we encourage everyone to act in a responsible manner and consider the impact on others with their use of fireworks and also consider attending one of the organised events where a great display can be viewed in a safe environment.

“Local community officers will be at the forefront of our policing operation to maximise the safety of the public and respond to any reports of anti-social behaviour.

“If necessary additional resources such as the operational support unit and mobile CCTV unit will be requested.

“However my intention is to deliver a safe and enjoyable Bonfire Night with the support of the local community.”
