Artist will be in the Frame at exhibition

-

Frames Gallery in Perth’s Victoria Street has an exhibition of paintings by the very gifted Jonathan Sainsbury.

The solo show by the accomplished wildlife painter runs until November 16.

Jonathan, who has lived in Comrie with his wife Kate since 2002, has been a painter his whole life.

Raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, he was dyslexic and this meant he always felt an academic life was beyond him and that art was what he wanted to study.

But art college did not suit him and he went back to Stratford, where he worked on a farm and then painted scenery for the rather famous theatre.

Eventually he did go back to college in Leeds and after graduating, started painting wildlife for a living, something he has done since then.

Making a living as an artist is an unbelievably difficult thing to achieve and it is a testament to Jonathan’s painting skills that he has managed to do this. However, you only have to look at his work to see why he is so successful.

His favoured medium is watercolour and charcoal which allows him to make very quick sketches in the wild which can be worked up into more complete pieces in the studio.

Jonathan is a very particular kind of wildlife artist as he is more interested in capturing a moment and birds in movement than in the detail.

He will quite often leave out a background so that the main subject is what captures the attention, something that is clear in his composition‘Squirrel Branch’ reproduced here.
