Sheku’s world tour stops off in Fair City

-

The young cellist who played at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding is appearing in Perth Concert Hall next month.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason won BBC Young Musician at the age of 17, and performed at the royal wedding, which was watched by three billion people, two years later.

Now leaving his hometown of Nottingham far behind, he is on world tour with a stop in the Fair City on December 22.

With over 60 million accumulative streams, Sheku has been named one of TIME Magazine’s‘Next Generation Leaders’, evidence of his ability to cross musical boundaries and draw new audiences into the world of classical music.

The award winning cellist releases a new album‘Elgar’, out on January 10.

This recording is anchored around Elgar’s Cello Concerto – arguably the best-known work in the classical canon written for solo cello, which saw the 100th anniversary of its first performance this month.

Sheku has set the iconic work amid nine exquisite pieces, which provide a musical context to the Cello Concerto.

The album begins with a beautiful adaptation of the traditional folk tune‘Blow the Wind Southerly’, an inclusion inspired by Kathleen Ferrier’s 1949 Decca recording of the song.

Also featured are Simon Parkin’s brand new arrangements of the gorgeous‘Scarborough Fair’ (for cello and classical guitar), ‘Spring Song’by English composer Frank Bridge, and ‘Elgar: Romance in D minor’ as well as a new take on ‘Nimrod’from Enigma Variations, arranged for six cellos.

Catch Sheku at Perth Concert Hall on Sunday, December 22, 7.30pm.
