Perth-based energy firm SSE bought over by OVO

- RACHEL AMERY

Part of Perth-based energy giant SSE has been bought over this week, affecting almost a thousand local employees.

SSE’s retail arm was officially taken over by OVO on Wednesday, January 15, in a transaction worth around £500 million.

The sale was agreed back in September last year, with the completion of transaction coming through this week.

This means hundreds of employees based at SSE in Inveralmond are now employed by OVO instead, along with millions of customers being transferred over to the new company as well.

However, a spokesperson for OVO has said nothing will change for Perth employees.

The spokesperson said:“The acquisition includes the customers, operations and employees of the SSE

Energy Services businesses, [around] 1000 of which are in Perth.

“We have a detailed integration plan that leaders from both companies have collaborated on since September and will share what we can, when we can.

“In the meantime, individuals and teams will continue to work as usual and nothing will change for the time being.”

OVO has said this new move will help the business towards its plans for zero carbon living, adding the combination of SSE’s scale and OVO’s technology capabilities will mean millions more people can decarbonise their homes while still keeping costs down.

Alistair Phillips-Davies, chief executive of SSE, said:“We are very pleased to be completing this transaction, which we firmly believe is the best outcome for the business, its customers and its employees.”
