Bid to break gridlock

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

A Perthshire councillor has proposed changing a village road into a one-way system in order to combat parking problems on football matchdays.

Councillor for the Carse of Gowrie Angus Forbes feels the move could stop “inconsiderate parking”on Pitfour, which sees those attending games at the nearby football pitch leaving their cars parked on pavements on both sides of the street.

Cllr Forbes said the village can be so congested it“can become a car park”with local residents’tempers often flaring over when they cannot park near their houses or they get blocked in their driveways by the vehicle logjam.

Various solutions have been tried and failed but it is hoped a one-way street would allow easier traffic flow even with additional cars parked on the side of the road and the pavement.

Signs could also be put up to direct match goers to other nearby parking spots.

Cllr Forbes said:“Whilst trying to find a solution to this issue, some local people mentioned that making the street one way would help.

“As is often the case, the best ideas come from the locals so I think it’s worth looking at.

“I have already had some success with other initiatives.

“The police and the council parking wardens will run unannounced days of action where they will target inconsiderate parking, that’s the stick element.

“I have asked about getting signs up pointing out that the school car park is open for parking, that’s the carrot and if the community agree that a one-way street will help, then I will see if that’s possible.

“I have leafleted all the houses in the affected area and the initial response has been positive.

“If the majority of people are interested then I will formally ask Perth and Kinross Council to consider it as an option.

“I have been pleased with the response from the football club who seem genuinely keen to solve the issue.”
