Parents across Perth and Kinross can start planning their holidays after the council agreed the school holiday schedule for 2021/22 and 2022/23.

In approving the plans, councillors will bring holidays for local children roughly into line with some neighbouring authorities.

It follows a consultation with neighbouring councils Angus, Dundee, Fife and Stirling to bring school holiday patterns closer together.

At a meeting of the lifelong learning committee last week, councillors approved dates for school terms and holidays for sessions 2021/2022 and 2022/2023, which the report says provides better commonality, particularly with Dundee and Fife councils.

The committee also approved the potential need for additional closure days if, for example, a school is moving into a new building.

The council report presented to the lifelong learning committee explained how “significant issues had arisen for parents and staff where there was no commonality between local authorities in setting the holiday dates...This presented both parents and staff with significant childcare issues in addition to the difficulties of organising family holidays.”

An example would be families with children at Invergowrie Primary (Perth and Kinross) and older children at Harris Academy (Dundee), although the future of pupils from Invergowrie continuing to be educated at Harris Academy is currently under review by Dundee City Council.

However the term dates for 2021/22 and 2022/23 may not align with Stirling Council and Angus Council.

Stirling Council is currently consulting with its school community on moving from one week’s holiday in October to two weeks and dropping the summer break from seven weeks to six.

Angus Council has already agreed its future school terms and holiday dates, so it will not be possible to change dates which have already been approved and published.

Back in 2007, councillors agreed to standardise the spring break with other local authorities by starting the twoweek break from the first Monday in April. PKC took the additional decision to ensure Good Friday and Easter Monday were always holidays in draft proposals even if they fall out with the spring break. It was noted that Good Friday and Easter Monday fall within the spring breaks in 2022 and 2023.

PKC is also seeking to align its inservice days with Dundee and Angus in order to be able to hold shared continuous professional development activities.

The motion was moved by Cllr John Duff and seconded by Cllr Caroline Shiers.
