East Region Cup win gives Scone a big lift
Scone Thistle boss Sean Whitworth hopes Saturday afternoon’s East Region Cup win can give his players the required boost.
The Jags advanced into the third round of the competition thanks to a 3-0 Farquharson Park win against West Calder United.
Whitworth admits it certainly wasn’t a classic, but a double from Aidan Benvie and a Stephen Moon goal helped lift spirits after a disappointing run of results.
“The performance, if I’m honest, was not the best since I have been back,”Whitworth told the PA.
“With quite a few players missing, a very young squad was available, with six players in the squad being 18 or younger.
“The most pleasing thing for me was the result to get us through into the third round and seeing a real desire to keep a clean sheet through working hard for each other.
“It was a fairly scrappy encounter but it’s pleasing to get a positive result following what has been a difficult period for the club.
“The lads were delighted to get the win and it’s no less than a lot of their commitment and work rate deserves.
“The victory should give the squad the confidence that we can kick on from here and have a good second half of the season.”
In the same competition, Blairgowrie exited after going down 2-1 against Kennoway Star Hearts at Davie Park despite Darren Neave pulling one back in the first half.
There were no further goals after the break and manager Mark Brash said:“The second half was a scrappy affair between two evenly matched teams. Right at the death we had a chance to equalise.
“All the best to Kennoway for the rest of the season. It was a pleasure to host them.”
Luncarty were in North Super League action but endured an afternoon to forget against Forfar West End at Brownlands Park, the visitors winning 3-0 with all goals scored in the second half.
Coupar Angus, taking to the field in the North Premier League, lost 4-1 away at Brechin Vics.
Experienced striker Allan Cruickshank netted the Coupar goal from the penalty spot.
