Musician struggled with cops

-

A Perth band member faced the music at the sheriff court after a binge drinking session following a local gig.

Chris Derrick (28), said to have“only the vaguest recollection of the incident,”was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work after he confronted officers in Perth city centre in the early hours.

Depute fiscal Michael Sweeney told Perth Sheriff Court he had been asked to leave the area after police were flagged down by door staff outside the Loft Nightclub.

But he became aggressive, started flayling his arms around, and had to be“taken to the ground.”

Mr Sweeney told the court:“He was kicking out at police and the struggle continued and police eventally got handcuffs on him. He then refused to go into the police van and was shouting out.”

He was taken to Perth

Police HQ but as he was being put into a cell, he attempted to bite PC Mark Peebles on the body.

Solicitor Jamie Baxter said Derrick had been playing at a gig that night: “After that, instead of going home, he continued drinking and woke up the next day in the police station. He binge drank that night but has since curtailed his drinking.

“Having been made aware of what occurred, he realises police were only trying to assist him.”

SheriffWilliamWood noted it was the second time the accused had been before the court in a relatively short space of time.

Derrick, of St Andrew Street, Perth, was given three months to complete the community payback order after admitting struggling with police in Perth’s South Street on December 15 and then assaulting the constable at the Barrack Street HQ.
