Sound of Canada set to entertain crowd at Perth Theatre

- RACHEL AMERY

A top trad band from Canada is coming to Perth next month.

Hailing from Nova Scotia, Celtic supergroup Coig (pictured) have announced they will be playing live at Perth Theatre on Tuesday, February 18.

The group comprises of Darren McMullen (guitar, mandolin, banjo, bouzouki, whistles, flute and vocals), Rachel Davis (fiddle, viola and vocals), Chrissy Crowley (fiddle) and Adam Young (piano), and the four grew up playing together in Cape Breton.

It wasn’t until years later they decided to form a band together, and they have been playing to the world ever since.

The crowds at Perth Theatre will be treated to songs from their latest release‘Ashlar’, which means ‘a perfect fit’.

It was recorded in Dave Gunning’s Wee House of Music studio in Nova Scotia during a brief break in the band’s busy touring schedule.

Fiddler Chrissy Crowley said:“We love playing to UK audiences, our spring tour last year was just amazing and we are so excited to get back and visit again this February.

“We can promise audiences an eclectic mix of lively and original sets to more traditional ballads and energetic covers - we think there’s definitely something for everyone. We’re looking forward to welcoming fans old and new to Perth Theatre this February.”

The album includes Gordon Lightfoot’s 60s classic‘Home from the Forest’, and a version of the Gaelic standard‘O Luaidh’.

There is also a set of jigs and reels called‘Time and Tide’, inspired by Chrissy’s new-found passion for joining her brother as a crew member on a Cape Breton fishing boat.

Coig will be performing at Perth Theatre from 7.30pm on Tuesday, February 18.

Tickets cost £17.50 and can be bought from the Horsecross Arts box office on 01738 621031 or www. horsecross.co.uk
