Benvie glad to have winning feeling back

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Aidan Benvie was thrilled to play his part in getting the winning feeling back for Scone Thistle.

The Jags’attacker netted twice in last week’s 3-0 East Region Cup win against West Calder United.

It was the club’s first victory for a number of weeks.

Stephen Moon was also on the scoresheet and Benvie hopes this can now be the start of a positive run of form.

He told the Perthshire Advertiser: “The West Calder game was a much needed break from league duty as we were well aware of the poor run of form we were on.

“It was great to get back to winning ways and put in a decent performance.

“On a personal note, it’s always good to score and hopefully the goals will start flowing until the end of the season to give the team the best chance of staying in the division.”

Scone, eighth in the North Super League, welcome fifth-placed Downfield to Farquharson Park tomorrow afternoon.

The last meeting between the teams, in November, witnessed the Dundee side run out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Benvie is planning for no repeat of that and instead is focused on pulling Scone away from the bottom two in the table.

“Downfield are a very tough team with good players that are very comfortable on the ball and can exploit us if we are not switched on,” added Benvie.

“Staying compact and rigid is going to be key and hopefully when we get the chance we take it.

“The standard of the Super League is very good and there are some top teams with very good experience, from ex pros to pro youths going on loan.

“Every game is a tough one but the team is always confident in our abilities to get results to push us up the table.

“We have a few players returning from injury and that will be a great boost until the end of the season.”

In the North Premier League, Blairgowrie, defeated in the East Region Cup by Kennoway Star Hearts last week, welcome Dundee Violet to Davie Park.

Coupar Angus are also in league action and face a Foxhall Park fixture against Brechin Vics.
