PKC unable to answer grit bin question

- PAUL CARGILL

Perth and Kinross Council has said it has no idea how much it has cost to keep 1300 grit bins across the region full over the last three years as this task is done by Tayside Contracts.

The admission comes after a user of a website which publishes responses to Freedom of Information requests quizzed the local authority about its spend on grit in the years 2017/2018 and 2018/19.

He also asked PKC how many applications for bins it processed in that time and how many bins were damaged and had to be replaced over the same period.

But the only useful information the What Do They Know website user was able to obtain from officials was how many bins are currently kept in the region, the make and size of them, the name of the manufacturer and a copy of the council’s winter policy.

PKC said in its response it could not answer any of the man’s other questions as this information was“not held”.

A spokesperson told the man by way of an explanation:“Grit bins are filled by Tayside Contracts on behalf of the local authority.

“Tayside Contracts is a commercially-based local authority contracting organisation providing catering, cleaning, roads maintenance, vehicle maintenance and winter maintenance throughout the Tayside area of Scotland.

“Although PKC holds some information in relation to grit bins, unfortunately we do not hold all information requested. You may wish to submit an information request directly to Tayside Contracts for this information.”
