Women’s group to celebrate big anniversary
A Perth women’s group is holding a special celebration next week to mark two anniversaries.
The National Women’s Register, which supports women across the UK, is marking its milestone 60th anniversary this month.
And the Perth branch of the register is marking its own 35th anniversary.
It will be holding a celebration on Wednesday, February 26 at the Black Watch Castle and Museum and members are encouraging as many people as possible to come along.
The organisation was started in 1960, by housewife
Maureen Nicol, who wrote to the editor of The Guardian’s women’s page in response to its editorial lamenting the effect on women’s minds of isolation and domesticity.
A spokesperson for the Perth group said: “To mark the 60th anniversary of its beginnings, National Women’s Register is holding regional events around the country, on February 26, 2020.
“National Women’s Register Perth, soon to mark its own 35th anniversary, is hosting the event for the east of Scotland with an afternoon tea at the cafe of Perth’s historic Black Watch Castle and Museum.”
Members from Perth, Crieff, Stirling and seven other groups from Bridge of Don to Dalgety Bay, will attend the event, which starts at 1.30pm in readiness for a nationwide broadcast by Maureen Nicol herself.
The spokesperson continued: “The event will be introduced by Wendy Birse, co-founder of the Perth group, with a self-penned paean to National Women’s Register women. After the broadcast, the guests will enjoy a delicious tea while sharing memories of their time as National Women’s Register members.”
