Chieftain role for Stephen

- JOHNATHON MENZIES

The chieftain for this year’s 150th Crieff Highland Gathering has been revealed.

The event’s board of directors recently announced the honour has been bestowed on Stephen Leckie.

The well-known Strath local is the chair and CEO of the Crieff Hydro portfolio of hotels.

Stephen, a former Crieff Community Council chair and the current lordlieutenant for Perth and Kinross, said: “I am honoured to be the chieftain of Crieff Highland Gathering in its 150th anniversary year.

“My family and our hotel have had a long association with the Gathering and my father was a director on the board for many years.

“There’s an impressive line-up for this year’s event and I look forward to working with the board to make the event a truly memorable occasion.”

The Hydro opened in 1868 and is now the oldest trading company in Scotland.

And it’s very much a family affair as Stephen’s wife, Fiona, is also part of the team, as is one of the couple’s two sons.

Crieff Highland Gathering chair Anna McLean said:“Both myself and the gathering’s directors are delighted Stephen has accepted this role in our 150th anniversary year.

“Crieff Highland Gathering is extremely proud of its reputation as Scotland’s premier Highland Games.

“We are unsurpassed when it comes to the diversity of things to experience during your day with us and we never stop looking for ways to improve the experience, the magic, the thrills and give our guests an even more unforgettable visit.

“And, as Stephen says, the line-up for our 150th anniversary is something special and you will hear much about it in the coming weeks.”

Thousands are expected to descend on Strath capital’s Market Park when the event takes place on Sunday, August 16.

And it’s set to be a big weekend as the Gathering is to be preceded by the second Crieff Highland Gathering Music Fest, to be held in the same location on Saturday, August 15.

Acts confirmed so far include headliners Scott Mills and Chris Stark of BBC Radio 1, Scottish music legends Big Country and karaoke favourites Massaoke.
