Chile talk from Bruce

-

A top Scottish lecturer is set to give a talk in Perth on the country of Chile.

Isolated by natural barriers, Chile is remarkable for its geographical and biological diversity.

It has the world’s driest desert, the highest volcanoes, and physical dimensions that frustrate cartographers.

Having been enthralled by Chile’s landscape and people, Bruce Gittings will be sharing his love for the country in Perth as part of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Inspiring People talk series, on Tuesday,

March 10 at the Salutation Hotel.

Bruce is a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, and in his illustrated talk he will argue Chile’s culture owes as much to Britain as it does Spain, and that its recent history remains shaped by the descendant of a French immigrant.

Before Bruce’s talk, the Royal Scottish Geographical Society will be holding a free exhibition at the Salutation Hotel on the theme of‘Firsts and nearly firsts’.

On display will be maps and artefacts, a letter to the society from the first man on the moon Neil Armstrong, and a signed copy of The Times special supplement announcing the first ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary.

There will also be several items relating to the local area.

The exhibition will be open from 6.30pm until 7.25pm, with Bruce Gittings taking to the stage at 7.30pm.

Tickets for the talk cost £10 and can be bought on the door or online via www.rsgs.org, although entry is free for members of the society and students.

Entry to the exhibition is free.
