Aspiring artist at new hub opening

- MELANIE BONN

A Perth school pupil who once had classes in the building that is now Perth Creative Exchange was welcomed back for the £4.5 million creative hub’s official opening.

Sophie Bruce, now in S6 at St John’s Academy, hopes to become an artist herself.

The teenager has applied to do a course in contemporary art practice and said she would one day like to have a studio in the Perth Creative Exchange.

She came back to what was her old primary school - St John’s Primary - to see the amazing transformation into studio and exhibition space.

The brick building also houses The Famous Grouse Ideas Centre for creative business incubation.

Wednesday, February 26 saw the Provost of Perth and Kinross Dennis Melloy do the official opening honours, as the creative hub on Stormont Street put on its first exhibition.

Cllr Melloy unveiled a plaque to commemorate the success of this partnership regeneration project by Wasps Artists’Studios and Perth and Kinross Council, in transforming an empty school building into a facility of high quality, affordable studios for artists, makers and creative businesses.

The Fair Exchange exhibition runs from February 27 to March 28 and is free to the public.

It is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and showcases work by Alan Borthwick, Sheila Borthwick, Su Grierson, Christine Goodman, Susan Hutchison, Susie Johnston, Liz Myhill, Helen O’Brien, Alison Price, Libby Scott, Ceri White, Evelyn White and Richard White.
