GUILD

The first meeting of the decade was held recently in the session house of Madderty Church and chaired by president Mrs Heather Moir.

The speaker for the evening was the Rev Peter Donald from the Sailors’ Society, who gave a fascinating insight to the history and work of this Christian charity.

The roots of the society go back to 1818, more than 200 years ago, and has provided a place of contact for sailors from all over the world when they land on our shores.

Sailors, even today, are often away from home for many months at a time. The society’s aim is to provide a listening post for them and nowadays also provides internet access for sailors to contact their family away from the working environment.

Help and advice is given in a Christian context but there is no attempt to proselytise and help is freely given, as a friend, to those of any religion and none.

It is a UK-wide charity and hopes to cover all the ports in the UK, with contacts across the world.

The Sailors’ Society is supported by the church guild nationally as one of its three year projects and Mr Donald was very appreciative of this support.

He was warmly thanked by Mrs Isobel Robertson. The tea hostess was Mrs Alison Pritchard and helpers.

After tea, the business of the guild was conducted which included a big ‘thank you’ to Mrs Moir for hosting the Christmas party in December as Madderty Hall was being used for the general election that day. The meeting was closed with members saying the Grace together.

The winner of last week’s TICC bonus ball was Joyce Russell on number 17.

The coffee morning is in aid of lsecondary school pupils from Polar Academy. Your support is much appreciated. All welcome to the TICC tomorrow at 10am.

The TICC whist and dominoes takes place on Wednesday, March 4 at 2pm. All welcome.
