Festival celebrates art and feminism

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

Three generations of female artists will present their finest work in Perth next week in celebration of International Women’s Day and Perth and Kinross Women’s Festival.

3G:3 Generations of Women Artists Perform (3G 2020) brings together women artists to perform live or on screen exploring issues of feminism, art and activism.

Perth Theatre’s Joan Knight Studio and Perth Concert Hall’s Threshold artspace will play host to the event on Friday, March 6 from 5pm until 7pm.

Starting in Perth Theatre’s Joan Knight Studio, new artists’ films ‘Gina’s Film’ and ‘Wild Thing’, by Scottish visual artists Kate Clayton and Jenny Hogarth respectively, will be on view on the large cinema screen followed by a Q&A with the artists.

There will be a display of art responses by BA (Hons) contemporary art and contextualised practice students at Perth College UHI led by course leader, artist and curator Lada Wilson.

The 3G evening will culminate with the launch of ‘Channelling’ – a new Horsecross Arts commission and museum acquisition for multiple screens by Jenny Hogarth.

The new work will be unveiled on the panorama at Threshold artspace at Perth Concert Hall, creating a “colourful meditative flow” across 22 screens.

Channelling presents kaleidoscopic views of a beach yoga class shot from an array of perspectives.

3G 2020 is the fifth annual event curated by Iliyana Nedkova, creative director for contemporary art at Horsecross Arts, the creative organisation and charity behind Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre.

She said: “I am very pleased that with this year’s 3G event, our fifth so far, we continue to stand at the threshold between performance art and feminism; that we continue to immerse ourselves in the feminist and performative practice of generations of women artists.

“3G also celebrates the fact that half of our Horsecross Arts museum collection of 350 works by Scottish and international artists is by women.

“Here’s to women artists. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”

Jenny Hogarth said: “This presentation at Perth’s Threshold artspace marks the start of a new stage in my solo work after a hiatus from practice following the birth of my children.

“I have made both new works ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Channelling’ - as part of an ongoing mediation on motherhood and creativity and I’m delighted to premiere them as part of 3G 2020.”

Kate Clayton said: “Showing for the first time in public at 3G 2020, my new work ‘Gina’s Film’ is also inspired by motherhood.

“When I was a young woman, my mother and I were constantly at loggerheads. Now she is extremely old and all the enmity has dissolved without trace.

“In Gina’s Film, as I interact with Gina in her care home, and push her wheelchair in the park and along the seafront, we talk warmly to each other, and to each fellow creature that we encounter.”

3G is free to attend but advance booking is essential through Horsecross Arts box office.

The screen performances are limited to over 14s due to scenes of nudity.
