Job done for Luncarty in East Region Cup

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

It was a case of getting the job done for Luncarty manager Robbie Holden at the weekend.

The Bleachers advanced through to the next stage of the East Region Cup thanks to a 2-1 victory over Bo’ness United Juniors.

The game was one of few to get the green light across the country and Holden admits conditions didn’t allow for free-flowing football.

But an own goal and a Sean Fergus strike secured the win, with Holden saying:“We are very pleased to be in the next round.

“The game was played in snow and high winds and, at one point, I thought they may call it off.

“We went one down against the wind but the second half was much better.

“It was one of those days that you say we are just happy to be in the next round, but it was pleasing again to see our character coming through.”

The Luncarty squad has recently been boosted by the arrival of Lee Deans, an experienced defender formerly of Jeanfield Swifts.

Holden, who previously played alongside Deans, was thrilled to get his signature for the remainder of the season.

“We are delighted to have signed Lee,”said Holden.“He is someone I played with for years and was player of the year in the Super League

“I know he had lots of options. He is quick, strong and can play a couple of positions so it’s a huge signing.”

Attentions this weekend turn to a North Super League tussle against bottom of the table Forfar West End.

The Angus men got the better of Luncarty earlier in the season and Holden is determined to put that right with a solid showing on Saturday afternoon.

“They are currently sitting bottom but have advanced in the cups so they are a good side,”he explained to the Perthshire Advertiser.

“They beat us 3-0 at home around a month ago so we have an opportunity to put that right.

“We know they are a threat going forward so we need to ensure we are stronger defensively than we were in the last game.

“If we do that then I’m confident the players we have can hurt them.”

Blairgowrie, meanwhile, are in North Premier League action away to fourth-placed Dundee Violet on Saturday.
