The fun of science

-

Senior pupils from two Perthshire schools have swapped their textbooks for test tubes as they spent an afternoon meeting medical researchers.

Fifth and sixth year pupils from Strathallan School and Glenalmond College were at the‘Meet the Researchers’showcase at Dundee Science Centre, hosted by Medical Research Scotland.

The annual event allows school pupils who have an interest in science or are considering studying a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subject the chance to meet young PhD students who are carrying out research into health-related problems.

Youngsters from the school were able to learn more about science, how to get into a career in medical research and to find out more about the research the young scientists were doing at Scottish universities.

The pupils were also able to meet with lecturers and industry experts to put their science skills to the test using interactive science demonstrations.

Professor Philip Winn, chair of Medical Research Scotland, said:“Today’s school pupils are tomorrow’s medical researchers.

“At Medical Research Scotland we aim to inspire and connect the next generation with Scotland’s leading medical professionals - in just a few years Perth’s secondary school pupils could be engaged in pioneering laboratory work.

“We welcomed school pupils from across Perth to get a taste of the career opportunities open to them in medical science and other STEM areas.

“I hope we’ve helped ignite a passion for science.”
