Brutal headwinds and rain welcomed a group of Perth Road Runners to the Arbroath Smokies 10-mile race.

But that weather did not stop 14 of the club’s ladies from battling through the conditions to post impressive times across the board.

Sonjia Crow picked up second in her age category with a time of one hour, 12 minutes and 20 seconds.

There was a first in age group run from Gillian McGuire who crossed the finish line in one hour, 17 minutes and seven seconds, while Rhona Younger clocked one hour, 18 minutes and 43 seconds.

Congratula­tions also went to Jill Garvie after completing her first run for the club in one hour and 29 minutes.

And Angela Thomson managed to clock a time of one hour and 34 minutes in her first ever 10-mile race.

Personal bests were the order of the day, Michelle Ridgeway taking eight minutes off her previous top time with one hour and 31 minutes.

Also setting new bests were Kate Marshall in one hour, 42 minutes and seven seconds, while Lindsay Finch ran one hour, 41 minutes and 28 seconds.

The ladies, who took the second team prize, were praised for their resiliency in the tough conditions.

Elsewhere, club athletes were in marathon action this week with Kevin Riddell and Piotr Fieodorow at the Meadows Marathon in Edinburgh.

Completing 18 laps of the park, Kevin finished second in a time of three hours, seven minutes and 10 seconds. Piotr clocked four hours, one minute and 31 seconds.

Two Perth runners, in much more favourable weather, laced up their trainers for the Malta Marathon.

Kevin Rogers ran a solid two hours, 56 minutes and 20 seconds for 23rd place, while Gillian Smith set a personal best of three hours, 42 minutes and 45 seconds.

To parkrun and a 47-strong turnout from the club pitched up at Perth where Kevin Riddell was first home, followed by Gair McRostie and Richard Ward.

For the ladies, Gillian Edwards was first home, followed closely by Kristen Bain and Rosie Aitken.

On the tourism trail were Mark Dunn at Ruchill parkrun, Fiona Manson and Mike Dales were at Loch Leven, Kate Marshall at Hay Lodge and Karen Christie at Levengrove.

The weekend had started on Friday with a fast, flat 3k race on Glasgow Green. Ronnie Glen was the sole club member completing the course in a personal best time of 10 minutes and 37 seconds.

Perth Road Runners meet for a training run on a Tuesday evening at 6.30pm, leaving from Bell’s Sports Centre. at Kilgraston, push-back at 12.30pm.

Elsewhere at the club the men’s third team secured a 1-0 win over Harris seconds last weekend, Robbie Preece the scorer. But the Perth fourths were defeated 1-0 by Harris thirds.

On the ladies’ front, the seconds went down 3-1 away at Grove Menzieshil­l despite a goal from Amy Robb. There was a hard-fought win for the third team, however, with Annie Webster netting the only goal of the game.

Beaten semi-finalists on the night were Jamie Fowler and John Townsley of Ormonds A and Phil Hayes and Stevie Hill of Chapel Hill.

A spokespers­on for the league thanked the Last Cast for hosting the event and all of the players for competing.
