Harriers reaping the reward of hard work

-

Personal bests and impressive performances helped keep the Perth Strathtay Harriers flag flying high over the weekend.

A number of athletes were in action at the Glasgow Emirates Arena as the Scottish Age Group Championships welcomed the country’s best.

Lewis Scott was taking part in the under-15 boys’ 60m, where he qualified for the semi-final with a personal best time. Involved in the championship for the first time was Abigail Robertson who ran in the 60m, where she got a personal best, and also in the 200m.

Erin Lee was out on the track for the under-15 girls’ 800m and came second in her heat to qualify for the final, where she finished fifth.

President of Perth Strathtay Harriers, Jim Hunter, said: “Once again, for a regional club, it was a great turnout.

“You need to be of a certain standard to even get on to the starting blocks.

“The fact we are turning out through a variety of ages bodes well for the club as we move in to the outdoor season.

“It’s a compliment to the coaches who are producing these athletes and producing them on a regular and consistent basis.

“There is the social aspect to the club and we have hundreds of kids turning up on a training night every week of the year.

“But with a coaching hat on, we are also are striving to put athletes on the

Scottish and national stage. For them to get personal bests, reach semi-finals and finals, that is absolutely brilliant.”

Jim is sure more impressive performances will follow from the club.

“Some were back down at the club earlier this week and they were buzzing,” he added. “It also has a knock-on effect with the other athletes.

“After 12 years of the track being in existence, we’re starting to reap the rewards at the Harriers.”
