Similar showing is the Perth plan

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Glasgow Women are fast becoming very familiar opposition for St Johnstone.

The Perth club played the west coast side in a pre-season friendly in December before coming up against them in the SWPL Cup group stage earlier this month.

And now the teams are preparing to face-off again, this time in the Scottish Women’s Premier League 2 on Sunday afternoon.

Saints, who were out of action last week but sit joint top of the early standings, head through to Petershill Park for a 4pm kick-off.

“We gave them the time off, both Friday and Sunday off,” said co-manager Myles Allan on last week’s plans.

“But we were back at it on Wednesday night before Sunday’s game.

“We played Glasgow Women recently and in a friendly just before Christmas.

“So it’s probably the team we know best of all. I’m not sure whether that is a good or a bad thing. But, in the cup game against them, we deserved to win, albeit the conditions were horrific.

“If we take the same sort of attitude and level of performance into Sunday’s game, then we should be okay.

“You don’t want to go into the game over-confident and don’t want to take your foot off the gas at all.

“We are a good team when we play a certain way. But when we don’t play to our strengths then it is not so good.

“We need to make sure we are at it and that everyone is at 100 per cent.”

Allan will be keeping his players’ feet on the ground this term but Saints are determined to be challenging nearer the top of the table.

“We have had two good results in a row against teams in our league and we are just looking to build on that,” Allan explained to the PA.

“We are always focused on the next game. There are other teams who are talking about winning leagues and stuff like that.

“But you don’t want to look too far ahead. It’s a case of week by week and building up as many points as possible, as early as possible.”

The squad should be a strong one for this weekend’s Glasgow trip but Allan will be without defender Rhee Tweedie and goalkeeper Becky Cameron.

Tweedie has been ruled out for a long period of time after picking up a knee injury while Cameron could be absent for another six weeks.

“We should have most of the girls for the weekend,” Allan said. “Obviously Rhee Tweedie is going to be long-term.

“I would be pleasantly surprised and delighted if she plays again this year.

“Becky Cameron, the goalkeeper, is going to be longer-term than what we thought. Initially we thought she would be back about now.

“But it’s looking like another six weeks out. She has had a combination of a knee and a hamstring injury.

“We are lucky because we have three goalkeepers, so we will be fine. Other than the long-ish term injuries, we should be okay.”
