Cup silverware is possible, says defender

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Lee Deans is certain Luncarty can pick up some silverware this season.

The experienced central defender only joined the Bleachers recently but has seen enough positive signs since arriving at Brownlands.

A Quest Engineering Cup quarter final away at Forfar West End is the latest challenge and one the Perthshire men are relishing.

“It’s been hard but great getting back to football,”Deans said.

“Having been out for nine months, it’s taken a while to get back to where I would like to be.

“I knew most of the boys and staff well. It made the decision to join a lot easier, knowing the quality they had.

“There is the nucleus of a really good squad and great team spirit in the dressing room, which is a huge plus for me.

“This means everyone wants to help and work hard for each other.

“Adding the personnel so far has ensured a lot more competition for places. Players now know they have to perform at every training session and game to keep their place.”

On opponents Forfar West End, Deans continued:“Playing at Forfar West End is never an easy game.

“They are always quite a physical team who work until the end whether you are one goal up or four.

“But I’ve got a good record there so hopefully it continues. I wouldn’t have joined Luncarty if I didn’t think we were capable.

“Already this season we have beaten some top teams like Lochee United and Broughty Athletic, so we are more than capable.

“We are hardly conceding any goals at the moment which gives you every chance in the cup competitions.”

There was disappointment last week after the Bleachers fell to a 1-0 North Super League defeat at Downfield. Deans was penalised for a controversial handball call, which allowed the hosts to net the only goal of the game from the spot.

“It was never a penalty,”smiled Deans.“The rest of the team seemed to back me up on this.

“I felt we were the stronger team throughout the game and relatively in control. Neither team looked like scoring, though, so a 0-0 would probably have been fair.”

Fellow North Super League side Scone Thistle are also in cup action on Saturday and travel to Tayport in the East Region Cup.
