Action by Pitlochry flood team

Resilience group is set up

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

A new flood group set up in a Highland Perthshire town is setting out to improve the living conditions of local residents.

Pitlochry Flood Group launched in January and is being initially positioned as a sub-group of the Pitlochry and Moulin Community Council.

The resilience team was created following a recent flood study carried out by Perth and Kinross Council’s housing and environmental services.

Residents felt the survey calculations had resulted in several at-risk places in the town not being “properly evaluated”.

The group is made up of dedicated local residents and businesses and was made possible by Highland Perthshire ward councillor Mike Williamson and Paul Laidlaw of Scottish Flood Forum (SFF).

As part of the group’s partnership with SFF, free flood surveys are being offered throughout the area - with Milton of Fonab

Caravan Park and four properties at Fonab Crescent among those to benefit from inspections - to help guide locals on how best to protect their homes.

Group member Jill Dougall, who runs the group’s social media page, said: “The group has been created on the back of a recent flood survey carried out by Perth and Kinross Council’s housing and environmental services.

“There were residents that felt that the survey calculations had resulted in several at-risk places in the town not being properly evaluated.

“Residents have been advised that these areas will not be re-evaluated until at least June 2022.

“Said areas are Fonab, Tummel Crescent, Port Na Craig and some concerns from the Aldour/Duke of

Edinburgh residents also.

“The creation of the group also highlighted the requirement for the Pitlochry Resilience Plan to be reviewed and updated.”

Highland Perthshire ward councillor Mike Williamson added: “We set up the flood group for the area.

“Residents held a number of concerns [over flooding]. It is a chance to look at what other options are available.

“The recent floods have not affected the area too much, but they have in the past.

“We held a second meeting to see what work could do.

“A number of flood surveys have been taken already in the area. I think it highlights what can be done to protect your home.”
