Businessmen help out with takeaway treat for mums

- MELANIE BONN

Two Perth businessmen decided Mother’s Day should not go unmarked in the face of many people following advice not to visit older mums in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Pete Chan of China China and Mike Clark of the Fish and Chip Company, both in working takeaways in Perth’s Craigie area, made a pact to deliver a hot meal free to anyone who was nominated online to get a Mother’s Day surprise.

Volunteer drivers, including some from Andy’s Man Club, sent out 66 food deliveries and a good number of self-isolating mums - the oldest was 93 - were delighted by the goodwill gesture on a day when they would perhaps ordinarily have gone out to lunch with family.

Whiteside worked“tirelessly”, collecting and collating meal requests sent in via social media. Free meals went as far as Scone, Bridge of Earn and Luncarty.

Pete Chan said yesterday after a flat out day on Sunday:“Mike and Charlene [Clark] and I have had a few folks contacting our businesses with offers of their own money for this wee project.

“It just goes to show, in times of trouble, good folk always appear.

“We may run and sponsor this again, next Sunday, for the folks that may have missed out, because, obviously, we’re not out of the woods yet.

“It certainly paid off, as we heard there were big smiles all around.”

There is now a Facebook page which people are welcome to join called Coronavirus Support in Perthshire.
