Care homes offer positions to people who’ve lost jobs

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

Care homes across Perth and Kinross are offering positions to those who have lost their jobs because of the coronavirus crisis.

Perth-based care provider Balhousie Care Group and national provider Renaissance Care, which runs Beech Manor Care Home in Blairgowrie, are reaching out in a bid to fill vacancies required to care for elderly residents.

Many of the roles have become available as some carers now have to remain at home with their children during the week due to the school closures.

The appeal is also reaching out to university students and those within hospitality and retail sectors to get in touch.

The Balhousie Care Group runs 10 care homes in the region, in places such as

Perth, Pitlochry, Kinross, Crieff and Coupar Angus among others, and will provide training to new staff if needed.

Group CEO Jill Kerr said: “There are vacancies across our homes for care staff, kitchen staff and support workers in permanent, temporary and flexible positions.

“We also want to build up our bank staff so that we have a pool of people to draw on these next crucial few months.

“The care sector was already facing a recruitment crisis and the coronavirus outbreak has put extra pressure on care providers.

“We have a situation now where colleagues are having to self-isolate or they can’t come into work because of schools being closed.

“We are reaching out to industry bodies in the hospitality and leisure sectors, and we’re keen to talk directly to workers who have been put on leave or lost their jobs because of the virus.”
