Ten months for substation work
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) says planned work to refurbish a substation close to Perth city centre could take its staff up to 10 months to complete.
The company has had to apply for planning permission to form a compound at Thimblerow substation comprising several cabins plus storage facilities and two skips so staff can swap old switchboards and transformers for new ones by the end of January next year.
A planning statement sent to Perth and Kinross Council says the company expects to use a range of equipment to complete the work, including an eight tonne excavator and a three tonne dumper truck which will have to stay on the site for the duration of the project.
The statement explains: “It is SSEN’s intention to carry out the refurbishment works at Thimblerow substation between April 6 and January 25, 2021.
“We will, however, be looking to complete the majority of the works by December 31, with only finishing work thereafter.
“The work will be carried out in two main stages, each lasting approx[imately] 17 weeks,

plus two to three weeks of installation and commissioning for each stage.”
And it concludes:“We expect a workforce of no more than eight persons on a regular basis, only increasing for short periods when items of plant are delivered to site, or monthly progress meetings are taking place.”
The application awaits a decision from PKC.
