Shuttle stars in Perth

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

The Mercure Junior Badminton tournament has been hailed a success after 70 young shuttle stars competed in Perth.

An annual fixture in the calendar, the event was run by Perth and District Badminton Association and held at Bell’s Sports Centre on Saturday, March 14.

A near 150 matches across more than 12 events kept the talented players and organisers busy throughout the morning and afternoon of play.

Close-fought games proved to be a constant sight, with overall winners coming from a wide variety of clubs throughout the Midlands area.

Secretary of Perth and District Badminton Association, Aileen Travers, was delighted with how the event panned out.

She said: “We were delighted with the numbers, slightly up on last year, although we did have some last minute calls-offs due to COVID-19.

“We had a very wide range of abilities playing. That was from highly ranked Scottish players who are playing the national circuit to school club players who were playing their first tournament.

“As we play the events in round robin format with elimination main draw and consolation events it means everybody, regardless of standard, gets plenty of games. It was really encouraging to see these new local people taking part. certainly hope to build on that next year.”
