A Kinross youth group has received praise for its social media engagement by using a new online programme for children and young people.

The programme, launched by The Boys’ Brigade (BB) organisation, helps youngsters take part in activities at home with their parents and carers.

This follows government advice issued last month on social distancing, with all face-to-face BB activities and events suspended across Scotland.

Local group 1st Kinross Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Association, however, has been determined that its members can still take part in the BB programme as much as possible, helping to provide much-needed fun and continuity for children and their families during these challenging times.

David Munro, captain of 1st Kinross, commented: “In these difficult days for everyone we are still engaging with our members through social media and I have received positive feedback from our youngsters about the online BB resources produced by brigade HQ for our anchor section, junior section and company section.

“Although we have missed out on participating in our normal Perth Battalion activities, we are looking forward to celebrating 100 years of the BB in Kinross when our formal session is due to resume in September.

“Former members are invited to recall memories from their times in the company and forward them to the Kinross company captain.”

The BB is making the new #BBatHome programme available across all its age groups and to non-members as well as existing members.

Weekly programmes are being created for: anchors (five to eight years), juniors (eight to 11 years) and company/seniors (11+).

The new resources are being published every Friday on the BB website and via an email alert that parents can sign up for.

John Sharp, director for The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, added: “For a period of time, The BB must work differently to how it has ever worked before in our 136 year history.

“Whether online or - hopefully again soon – our face-to-face activities, the BB will continue to provide young people with opportunities to learn, grow and discover.”

A fast food cafe in the far north of Perthshire has started selling food essentials for the Blair Atholl community during coronavirus.

Food in the Park has been a live music venue and takeaway food outlet serving suppers to holidaymakers in Blair Atholl for several summers, but it re-opened early this season to a whole new business climate.

With no tourists and the Atholl locals experiencing coronavirus lockdown, on top of the takeaway - now available as a drive-thru the owners of FITP have set up a store selling food and household goods.

They have come up with the idea of people bringing their own containers to fill up with liquid handsoap, selling at £1 per 100ml.

With a basic stock of sugar, flour, pasta, tins, eggs and beer, they are open from 10am-5pm Monday to Friday.

Customers should call ahead on 01796 481244 or 07967 023836 to arrange delivery or if they find no-one in the shop.
