Saints keep the competition alive

-

It has now been a little over a month since the last Scottish Premiership game was played.

But St Johnstone captain Jason Kerr has revealed that time in lockdown has done little to dampen the players’competitive edge.

Speaking in his weekly Saints blog, the 23-year-old revealed some members of the squad have turned their daily 5km run into a time trial competition to see who is remaining sharpest while the football is on hold.

He said:“I’ve still been doing my 5km runs each day and a few of the boys have now started turning it into a wee competition between the players.

“I think Scott Tanser is winning just now – some of the times he’s been getting have been unbelievable.

“The weather has been really nice which I think has been a good and a bad thing.

“It’s great getting out when the weather is nice and it makes the runs I’ve been doing more enjoyable.

“On the flip side though, once I’ve finished my runs I’m stuck indoors when it’s sunny and warm outside.

“Not having a garden makes it quite tough but you’ve just got to get on with it.

“I’ve turned the spare room in my flat into a wee gym area where I can do core exercises and legs.

“I’ve stuck my spin bike in there as well.

“There are lots of things you can do indoors to keep active. Squats and lunges are good for the legs, and you can do loads of core exercises and circuits too.

“If you Google exercises to do at home I’m sure you’ll find quite a few you can try.”

The tall stopper added that Perth players and manager Tommy Wright are continuing to call up season ticket holders during lockdown and hailed their overall response as“amazing”.

“The gaffer and the players have been phoning round some of our season ticket holders in the past few weeks to check-in and have a wee chat,”he said.

“I’m not going to lie, the first call I felt a little bit out of my comfort zone, but the response has been amazing.

“We’re all really enjoying chatting to the fans and I think the unanimous feeling is that we all just want to see football back as soon as possible.

“Most of the fans I’ve spoken to said they saw in the paper we were doing it but never actually expected to get a call themselves so it’s nice to surprise them a bit.

“Everyone I’ve spoken to seems to be doing well.

“And, if you get a phone call from someone saying they’re Jason Kerr, it’s probably me.

“Hopefully we’ll get back to a bit of normality soon, but in the meantime make sure you all stay home, stay safe, and we’ll see you soon.”
