Wewere flying – Wright

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright feels the league campaign being stopped halted one of his side’s best spells of form during his tenure in Perth.

Saints’ surge up the table from before Christmas to the start of March - when they only lost twice in 15 games - turned the club from Premiership strugglers to being a single win away from entering the top six.

The club’s 1-0 league win over Livingston on March 7 could well turn out to be their last of the 2019/20 campaign after Dundee belatedly backed SPFL plans to end the season in the lower divisions.

The SPFL now have the power to end the top-flight campaign should they deem it impossible to play the outstanding fixtures, with talks to explore a league reconstruction for next term currently taking place.

Regardless of what happens next, Saints’ Lazarus act will not be forgotten quickly by the Perth boss.

He said: “It’s right that football is put to the side at the minute, there are more important things in the world.

“But the timing from a football sense could not have come at a worse time for us.

“The only teams that have beaten us since the end of November have been Celtic and Livingston.

“It has been as good as any run we’ve had here.

“You need to consider the squad is young, where we were in November, and the level of criticism.

“Some of that criticism was justified, some not. People had written us off. It has been an unbelievable turnaround.

“Not many teams would be sitting bottom of the table in November/December and then, come March, pushing for top six.

“I don’t think that has happened in recent years. Usually the teams in the bottom two places in December don’t get out of there.

“David Wotherspoon and Liam Craig have been incredible. Murray Davidson as well before he got his injury. All of these players have chipped in.

“They have all contributed to a season that didn’t start well, but has turned out to be another excellent one for us.”
