Plug is pulled on Enchanted Forest

Light and sound show is victim of virus fallout

Highland Perthshire has been dealt a major blow after it was confirmed October’s Enchanted Forest event has been cancelled.

The Enchanted Forest Community Trust, organisers of the sell-out event in Pitlochry, announced its decision to cancel the 2020 light show on Friday.

More than 16,000 tickets had already been sold. This autumn was to be the light and sound event’s 19th season of drawing huge crowds to admire a magical woodland at night.

In a statement, the trustees of the charity said: “It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that, due to the ongoing effect of COVID-19, The Enchanted Forest Community Trust has reached the decision to cancel this year’s event.

“Alongside the whole world, we have been watching the situation closely as it develops and, while we had quietly hoped the ban on mass gatherings may ease off in the autumn, it is clear to us now that the ongoing requirements for physical distancing may remain in place until the end of the year.

“That and a lack of clarity surrounding the duration of the ban on mass gatherings means it is simply too risky for us to continue with our plans.”

The Enchanted Forest Community Trust has confirmed that with 16,000 tickets for October 2020 already bought, everyone will receive a refund which will be processed over the next two weeks.

MSP John Swinney, Pete Wishart MP and Highland ward councillor Mike Williamson all commented on the news the event would not happen this year.

Perthshire North MSP John Swinney said: “Whilst this is a sensible decision, it is one that will bring significant sadness to Perthshire residents.

“The Enchanted Forest has proven to be a huge hit and has made a significant impact on our local economy.

“I am confident that this temporary setback will do nothing to slow the growth of this magnificent event.”

Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, said: “The Enchanted Forest is a unique tourist attraction and something which usually draws people from all over the country.

“Given the need to continue to follow social distancing for the foreseeable future, it is completely understandable as to why organisers had to make the difficult decision to cancel this year’s event.

“I wish all the team the very best and I can’t wait to welcome them back in 2021.”

Cllr Mike Williamson added: “Whilst it is disappointing that the Enchanted Forest cannot go ahead this year, it is totally logical as to why it had to be cancelled for 2020. I am sure that the organisers will be putting everything they have into welcoming visitors again when it is safe to do so.”
