Fans agree he’s the best Saints boss ever

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

They dared to dream and those dreams came true.

Emotional St Johnstone supporters have given their thanks to a manager labelled as the club’s greatest.

Shockwaves were sent through the Perth support on Saturday when Tommy Wright announced the time had arrived for his journey to end.

Some internet snipers were pushing the panic button earlier in the season when Saints struggled at the foot of the table. But Tommy did what Tommy does.

He had his determined team on the cusp of the top six when football was halted due to the coronavirus.

Perhaps the Northern Irishman himself does not realise the full impact his time in charge had on those who watched from the stands on a weekly basis.

Their message was clear when the Perthshire Advertiser caught up with them over the weekend.

Gordon Muir said:“I can tell you what he did for me – he gave me joy beyond anything I had ever experienced following Saints.

“He took me places with my team I could never have dreamed of. And he was a good guy.

“Every time I met him he was great, had time to chat and, even though I had at times been vocally critical, he would never let that change the way he was.

“Our annual golf day was a perfect example. He attended even though it was his day off and he was just one of the lads. No airs and graces. Just Tommy.”

Steven Watt said:“Sooner or later all good things come to an end.

“We can never underestimate just what Tommy achieved in his seven-year tenure as manager of Saints.

“Undoubtedly the greatest manager in our history, even taking the cup heroics out of the equation, he’d still be our greatest ever.

“He has played the pivotal part in shaping what has been an unforgettable period for Saints fans.

“He’s created memories that will be etched in our brains for a lifetime and be regaled to future generations of St Johnstone fans.

“He leaves with all Saints fans best wishes and understanding that at some point, while it came as unexpected, this day would come.

“Thank you Tommy for the best of times.”

Lauren McDonald said:“I think it’s fair to say Tommy gave us many memories over the years, from Europe to winning our first Scottish Cup, to late winners against Hibs.

“But also being able to prove others wrong time and time again, finishing top six and defying the odds.

“It was clear how passionate he was with his reactions to late winners against Hearts, Hibs and Dundee in particular.

“The man will be missed and will forever be a legend of the club.”

Connor McKinnie said:“For me, I think it is indisputable that Tommy Wright has been the club’s greatest ever manager.

“He achieved top six status numerous times, led the club to Europe on multiple occasions and produced incredible results against formidable European sides along the way.

“All of these of course are topped by the cup win in 2014. He wrote St Johnstone’s name into the history books and the Saints fans of the present became the lucky ones in all the generations of supporters to finally witness the club win the highest honour of Scottish domestic cup football.

“His passion for the club has always been clear to see. He leaves St Johnstone with the best wishes of all supporters of the club.”

John Kaylor said:“The magnificent seven years of Tommy Wright.

“Every supporter of every club dream of success, not a lot of those dreams come true.

“Tommy Wright made every Saints fans’dream come true on that day in May 2014, for that alone he is a legend in Saints fans eyes.

“But we had more than that one moment. We had some great players, great European trips and he made us consistently one of the top teams in Scotland.

“And certainly the top team in Tayside in all those seven magnificent years to be a Saints supporter. Thanks for the memoriesTommy.”
