‘Heartbreaking’ sight of trash dumped in scenic glen

- MELANIE BONN

Fly-tipping has hit even the remotest corner of Perthshire with a van load of trash being dumped in Glenlyon down the bank below historic Carnbahn Castle.

Local resident Jane Riddell described it as“heartbreaking”when on Monday she saw a mixed load of plastic, toys, bike parts and bin bags littering the leafy beauty spot, eight miles from Aberfeldy.

“This must have happened between 11am and 1pm below Carnbahn Castle,”she said. “We have informed police with photos, we also found a Glenrothes address.

“Police gave us a contact number for collection of the waste and this is done through SEPA.

“We have been advised not to touch it. It’s really, really sad.”

Jane’s sister-in-law, June Riddell, spoke for the Glenlyon and Loch Tay Community Council:“I am horrified my the mindlessness of these people. How anyone could drive all the way to our beautiful glen, purely to desecrate it, is beyond comprehension.”

Addressing the effect of restrictions on legal dumping due to tips being closed because of the pandemic, Jane added:“Personally, I feel that if any restrictions were lifted, it should be far more important to open up the recycling centres than to allow people to exercise more than once a day.

“Realistically, how many of our overweight population really want to exercise that amount? The disposing of any kind of rubbish is much more important and social distancing in these centres could not be easier.”

The mess had been cleared by Wednesday.

Councillor Mike Williamson told the PA that Police Scotland had told him of four recent incidents in Highland Perthshire, at Kinnaird Estate, in Aberfeldy and two in Glenlyon.

“Fly-tipping is completely inappropriate, people need to take responsibility for their rubbish,”he said. “Police will be stepping up patrols, keeping an eye out for this kind of irresponsible behaviour and taking action.”
