Vow to make up for lost time next year

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

Perth Americana band Longstay have released their special song in honour of 100-year-old walking hero Captain Tom Moore.

The five-piece band recorded‘NHS to Captain Tom’, a song based on David Bowie’s Space Oddity.

Three members pieced together parts, crafted from their own homes during lockdown.

They posted it to Captain Tom as a 100th birthday present after he had walked 100 laps of his garden with his Zimmer frame.

Singer Calum Campbell told the PA:“The response to it on YouTube was really positive and lots of people were asking us to release it properly, so we did.”

The download costs 79p and proceeds are going to NHS charities.

The song is available on Apple and Spotify.

The organisers of the Perthshire Pride event have vowed to make next year’s event even bigger to“make up for lost time”.

The team was forced to pull the plug on the event earlier this week due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But they refused to be downhearted and said they would be returning in 2021.

This year’s event was supposed to take place in the city on August 8.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the group said the decision had been taken after “close and continuous review” of the situation.

The statement added: “We always strive to create a safe and inclusive space at our Pride events and truly believe we would not be able to achieve this if we continued with our date.

“Always the optimists here at Perthshire Pride, we wanted to wait that little bit longer in case any major developments in the situation changed but as lockdown is extended and confidence of attending large events is shaking, we believe this is the right decision.

“The safety and enjoyment of our participants is at the forefront of any event we plan and this will never change.”

However, vowing to make the event even better in 2021, the statement continued: “We will now shift our efforts into making the 2021 Pride event even bigger and better to make up for lost time.

“In the meantime, we will continue to have online content and events until we can meet up again.

“We hope you understand and keep yourself happy and healthy.”

The Pride event started in 2018, and included a parade through the city for the first time last year.

Award-winning actor Sir Ian McKellen even paid a visit on his way to Pitlochry to perform in a play.

News of the cancellation is just the latest to rock the Fair City economy, with many events having already fallen foul to the pandemic.

And on Tuesday, we reported that doubts remained over the popular Winter Fest events, including the Christmas light switch on.
