Sun shines for Kirsty and Nadia’s big day
Moment of joy for couple despite tragic diagnosis
A Perthshire woman who is dying of a cancer missed by medics got married last week in a touching ceremony.
Kirsty Maxwell was diagnosed just three weeks ago – two years after she first went to the doctor for help, who proceeded to treat her for an eating disorder for a year.
But last Friday, businesswoman Kirsty (31) and her fiancee Nadia Huggan (28) of Alyth had a moment of joy when they tied the knot at Blairgowrie registrar’s office.
Speaking to the PA this week, Nadia said: “It was an amazing day and the sun was shining for us.
“It was in Alyth with a small gathering of friends and family. The police checked and they were happy that we were maintaining social distancing and following guidelines.
“It was in a friend’s very large garden so there was plenty of room to have people attend with social distancing.”
Nadia said the experience was “surreal”.
She added: “It was a fantastic day, very emotional as it was sooner than we thought we’d get married and unfortunately under circumstances that we would never have thought would happen to us.”
Nadia wore a wedding dress while Kirsty wore a tartan suit for the ceremony.
Most weddings have been axed because of COVID-19 but the couple’s was allowed to go ahead as they do not know how long they have left together.
Doctors had treated Kirsty for anxiety and depression when she told them she was struggling to swallow food and had an upset stomach – after first prescribing medications like Gaviscon.
After a year, she was taken to hospital for a throat biopsy but Nadia said it was taken from the wrong place so came back negative.
She added: “The cancer was never picked up.”
It was only after Kirsty had lost six stone and was taken to hospital for a procedure to help her swallow more easily that they found the cancer.
Kirsty, who has months to live, has organised her own funeral and Nadia has begun an appeal to help pay for it.
